New mum gifts: unique baby shower gifts

When it comes to new mum gifts it’s really easy to focus on the new life of the baby, rather than the changing life of the mum. We get it. Babies, with their big eyes and chubby cheeks are pretty darn adorable, but let’s face it, other than a willing pair of arms and a steady supply of milk, there’s not much else a new baby needs. So why is it that we concentrate so much on gifting to the newborn, rather than taking care of the new mum? Here we share 10 unique baby shower gifts that will help mum recover during the postpartum phase.Image result for new mum gifts
1. Postpartum recovery kit
The first six weeks postpartum is all about recovery for the new mum. Whether she had a straightforward delivery, or if there were complications, she has been through what is probably the most physically enduring experience of her life, and her body will feel the strain. For that reason a postpartum care kit is a great way to help her heal. Boxes contain all sorts of healing goodies including soothing bottom sprays, maternity pants, organic pads and nutritious snacks. This is the gift she REALLY needs to get her through those first few weeks!
2. Breastfeeding recovery kit
Breastfeeding can be very challenging in the early days and for most women it takes between two and six weeks to get well established. A breastfeeding recovery kit with breastfeeding essentials such as nipple balm, bamboo breast pads, lactation tea and lactation cookies is a great gift for any new mum to give her a nudge in the right direction.
3. Food, food and more food
Obviously this isn’t one to take to the baby shower, unless it’s in the form of a food voucher, but taking round a hearty meal to the new parents is a great postpartum gift. Simply put, the postpartum phase is exhausting and all consuming for both parents and in between nappy changes, feeds and sleepless nights, it’s rare that either parents will have the energy to get busy in the kitchen and whip up a tasty and nutritious meal.
4. A New Baby Journal
People always say the first few weeks go by in a flash and they really do so a new baby journal is a great way to remember the little things you might otherwise forget. The good thing is that a sweet keepsake like this can be used for the baby’s first year and you can log medical appointments and milestones as well as using it as a scrap book. As well as being a lovely memento for mum, it’s lovely for children to look back on when they are older.
5. A Newborn Photography Session
In the early days babies literally change before your eyes so a newborn photography session is a great way to capture those first precious few weeks. Of course, always make sure you book with a studio that is used to doing newborn photography so they know the drill.
6. A TV Subscription
New mums very often put their own needs at the back of the queue, but it’s so important that they take time to rest in the early weeks. Give them an excuse to retire to the couch, in the form of a TV subscription. They can get hooked on a few good box sets while they work through those early breastfeeding sessions.
7. Dry shampoo (and other quick-fix beauty bits)
Let’s face it, when you’ve been up all night with a newborn the last thing you feel like doing is washing your hair and giving it a blow dry. That’s why a can of dry shampoo is perfect for days when a shower isn’t going to make it on to the ‘to do’ list. Why not grab a basket and fill it with a few other quick fix beauty bits, like a good eye cream, some lip gloss and a Tangle Teezer Brush?
8. At-home mani-pedi voucher
She’s not going to get out for a mani-pedi anytime soon, so send the mani-pedi to her. There are a variety of great services that will come to your home and give you the five-star treatment from the comfort of your own living room. Perfect for a new mum who has been up all need and needs a bit of TLC.
9. A thoughtful keepsake
Spoil her with something personal like a birth stone necklace or a leather ‘Day You Became…’ keyring.
10. A baby sling
Undoubtedly she’ll have invested in a pushchair, but if pushing a stroller around isn’t always convenient, especially if the new mum lives in a busy city, a sling is a great alternative. A good sling is a practical way to get out of the house and not have to wrestle through the streets with a big stroller.
